So last week, me and my dad were at a business meeting and I was sitting there playing with a rubber band that I happened to have around my wrist. For some reason, I end up having these rubber bands around my wrist often because I frequently sort through letters that are tied together with a rubber band, and I don’t want to throw the rubber band out (my attempt at being frugal). But what ends up happening is me forgetting that I have these rubber bands around my wrist and then ending up wearing a rubber band bracelet for the rest of the day.
So on this occasion, I guess I must have noticed a rubber band around my wrist again, and I subconsciously started to play with it. Maybe a nervous habit. I don’t know. But then, my dad notices me doing this and goes to our business colleague, “… he always liked to play with rubber bands when he was a kid.” And starts chuckling!
Gee. Thanks Dad for pointing out that your 29 year old, MBA graduate, son is still a kid that likes to play with rubber bands. You rock! That fucker.
But then this got me thinking. I did like to play with rubber bands a lot. I remember back in Korea, we used to have this thick black rubber band string that my mom used to use to replace the elastic that wore off on our underwear. Well, one of my uncles once showed me how if you twist this rubber band around and around, it looks like a caterpillar. And if you let it go once it’s all twisted, it slowly starts to unravel, making it look like it’s an actual bug that moves. For some reason, I found this fantastically entertaining! I literally sat there for hours twisting the rubber band and letting it go over and over again.
I also remember that I liked to play with socks. For some reason, I was able to entertain myself with a pair of socks as a kid. I’d roll them up and fold it, .. and then unfold it. Make a sock puppet, … make a sock ball and throw it around, etc. Endless hours of entertainment, I tell ya.
Now, … you people reading this might think, boy, what a strange kid Dr. Evil was. But you know what, … this doesn’t mean that I was a strange kid. Sure, … this might mean that I’m somewhat easily amused. I’ll give you that. But do you know what this really means?? It means that my parents were too fucking cheap to buy me real toys. Either too cheap or just didn’t give a shit enough. Either or. Regardless, … they just threw me whatever they had lying around. A rubber band and some fucking socks.
“Oh, … Little Dr. Evil has no toys. Here you go, … go play with this.”

And I bet you the first pair of socks that I played with weren’t even a fresh pair! I bet you that my dad probably just took the socks off of his feet and tossed it at me. That fucker.
No. I didn’t have any fucking legos, or transformers, GI Joe action figures. No. Really. All I had was a fucking pair of socks and a rubber band. And you know what, … it’s not bad enough that they turn me into a fucking welfare baby that plays with socks. Now, … years later, … they go as far as to make fun of me about it when I’m a grown adult. You believe that?? The world is a fucked up place I tell ya. Fucked up.

i like playing with napkins.
you don’t mind if i use some of this in my toast, right? hahaha….
Haha, what imagination you have to be able to keep yourself entertained with a pair of socks and a rubber band.
I used to eat the end part of a match. Used to eat so many, that my dad was afraid Id catch on fire if I got a rug burn.
Great blog man. that fucker <—-flucking classic
And I bet you the first pair of socks that I played with weren’t even a fresh pair! <– maybe that’s where your aversion to feet came from.
i too played with socks. making puppets =)
ryc:yes, i’m sure they use all the alternative treatments as well.
HAHAAHAHAHA this post was hilarious. i’m sorry for your trials and tribulations but keep writing about it, cuz it’s funnie shit!!
It’s funny that you chastise your parents for being cheap in the same post where you admit you’re unable to throw away rubber bands.
I bet you that my dad probably just took the socks off of his feet and tossed it at me.
did the smell fascinate you?
I was thinking the same thing as Jay was. I bet when you have kids you’ll just give them dirt to play with.
i know a lot of people who like to wear rubber bands as bracelets. especially when they play basketball. i’ve never understood it.
HAHAHA… you poor ghetto child. i can’t believe your dad called you out during a business meeting! that’s CLASSIC. let me guess.. you also like to take straw wrappers, squish it like an accordian (sp?), put a drop of water on it, and watch it “grow”?
hahah awww…
…to replace the elastic that wore off on our underwear.
DUDE…how long did you guys keep your underwear?
we never had toys growing up either. but it was okay since there were 4 of us.
we used to play a game called “dirty underwear”, i think another korean family taught it to us. it was kinda like tag but using a dirty underwear. in retrospect, that was a little bit weird.
haha. poor you. Here’s another way of looking at things. I always believed that kids these days have no imagination whatsoever. They’re given toys that talk and move all on its own. They don’t use their imagination to have fun, ya know? Feel better? (Probably not – haha). Playing with rubberbands is one thing… I just hope you still don’t play with dirty socks. If you do, at least tell me that you play with your own stinky socks and not your dads. haha. and DOODE, you’re 29? You sure don’t seem like it… haha. Just kidding. after all, we are all kids at heart, right? haha
back in high school, doctorevil also liked to play with chocolate dildos.
sorry to say, but i had some voltron toys and macross 7 toys… they were all hand me downs from my older cousins though. as long as you had fun, that’s all that matters right? that rubberband insect thing sounds kinda cool… i’m gonna have to use that on girls.
my sisters and i got a bunch of school supplies for christmas when we were still in elementary school. we were traumatized.
i used to also be amused by that rubberband caterpillar trick too!! neato.
lol~ you always make me laugh~
Jay has a good point.
I keep rubber bands and wear ‘em on wrist, too, haha.
Also, frugality is typical among most Asians. Err, well, more so amongst the older generations.
Stop your bitchin. You were the first person I knew to get a Nintendo, and a Nintendo with that damn robot to boot.
haha. i love it!

ryc: as i said, i never understood it. to each their own, i suppose.
as for the quarter-life crisis…i’m rapidly approaching the 25 year mark, and i think that my job, while i enjoy it immensely, is superficial. *shrug* that’s what it is.
Yeah, I think the water therory could be true. But it’s like marxisim. On paper it looks good, but in practice..eh..never works. I mean if I drank a glass of water and it’d have to be at least an 8oz glass of water, that’d be 24 beverages in my stomach. I’d have to sit on the toliet the whole night, if I could manage to drink that much. Therefore, I’ll take the chasers. I think they’re worth the $5, actually I didn’t pay for them, my friend did.
stick a sock in it!!!
are you telling me that that excerpt WASN”T funny?!! omg – i ban you from reading my entries!!! haha.
THATS RESOURCEFULNESS
You are fucking halarious. Im subscribing to you. I especially loved the one on the catcalls.
I admit, they are annoying, but when someone doesn’t say something Is when I start to worry. You have us pegged! You’re like Mel Gibson in “What women want”.
haha, rubber band? jeebus, thank god i had some papers to shred into lil pieces…
at least your dad could’ve gotten you a pair of colorful socks to play, not those plain white cotton ones.
